Farm - How to get there

Lýtingsstaðir is situated in the North of Iceland in Skagafjörður.

You will find our farm close to the well known mountain of Mælifellshnjúkur. Here we raise sheep and horses on 400 hectares of grazing land.

The National Road # 1 is only 20 km away. The highlands are possible to enter in under 3 hours by horseback!

If you are travelling by car follow the signs in Varmahlið on road No. 752 (direction Sprengisandur).

We provide pick up service for our riding holiday guests from the bus station Varmahlið or from the domestic airport in Sauðárkrókur.

History of the farm

The farms history begins at the time when the first settlers came to Skagafjörður ca 900 a.Chr. Eiríkur Hróaldsson settled down in Vesturdalur (Hof) and rewarded his "slaves" afterwards with giving them land to build up their own farm. Lýtingur got ca. 1000 hectares. His place was named "the place of Lýtingur" = Lýtingsstaðir.

Lýtingsstaðir was the biggest farm in this area and gave the community its name: Lýtingsstaðahreppur. There was a church and later a so called half church from 1318 until the middle of the 18. Century. The exact place is not known anymore. A community house (Þinghús) was established on Lýtingsstaðir from 1750-1957. Unfortunately nothing of the old buildings are to see anymore but the history of the farm and its inhabitants is written down to give forward.

Parts of the Lýtingsstaðir land has been separated and sold over the centuries. About 400 hectares belong nowadays to the farm which Sveinns parents bought in 1939.

The farm nowadays

A farmhouse build in 1960 and enlarged in 2005 as well as a horse stable for about 18 horses (new stable is planned for the future) belong to the farm.
The sheep have an open stable to walk in and out whenever they like to.

We have six newly furnished guestrooms in the house with place for 14 guests. A cosy corner for reading and relaxing with view on Mælifellshnjúkur is on the upper floor. Three restrooms (two of them with showers) and a big dining room are equipped for the guests use.
