Farm - Horses and sheep
Our horses
We breed with approximately 10 mares, which get foals almost every year. We have a young stallion (Jörfi) at the moment which we use for some of the mares.
Further we own about 40 riding horses for tours, holidays and horse rental. They are more during the summer time as we can borrow some horses from neighbours and friends which is always very appreciated.
Our herd is a collection of breeding mares, foals, youngsters and riding horses.
Our sheep
The Icelandic sheep is as well as the Icelandic horse a pure breed since the the first settlers came with their animals about 1000 years ago.
We have a rather small breed with approximately 75 sheep which get about 150 lambs every year. The meat production is the main reason for breeding sheep in Iceland.
Our herd has sheep with horns and without horns. Most of them are white but a few black faces colour the group.
May is the month of lambs. Mother sheep and lambs are driven in the highlands at the end of June, where they spend the summer time. They are collected again in September. Grown up sheep are sheared and some youngsters sorted out for future breeding.
