Saga Tour
This tour has become one of our favourite programs. We offer a various program with interesting sightseeing tours on horseback and by bus. You will discover Skagafjörður and learn a lot about its history while riding on magnificent Icelandic horses through an impressive landscape. One highlight is a two-day-trip into the valley Vesturdalur.
Program
Monday:
Guests arrive on Lýtingsstaðir followed by a short ride. Dinner and accommodation on Lýtingsstaðir.
Tuesday:
We ride on an old path which was forgotten for many years and has been discovered again a few years ago. The path was once used by the farmers to visit the community parliament. Now we enjoy the marvellous view over Skagafjörður while riding on the soft path. We find a nice place to stop and have lunch. Our way goes along the glacial river Heraðsvötn where we see the bird life in this area (mainly geese). We will ride up the river and enter Lýtingsstaðir wide grazing lands. The ride lasts for 5-6 hours. Dinner and accommodation on Lýtingsstaðir.
Wednesday:
Today we go on an interesting sightseeing tour through Skagafjörður. We drive along the delta and visit the small church at Gröf, build from turf. Afterwards we travel to the small fishing village Hofsós with its basalt rocks along the coast, colourful houses and a small but beautiful harbour. We go on the Hólar, famous for its Agricultural University and a long history as a bishop’s seat. We end the tour with a short visit of Sauðárkrókur, the capital of the fjord and drive back to Lýtingsstaðir for dinner and accommodation.
Thursday
We start a two day ride into the beautiful valley Vesturdalur. We ride along the glacial river and stop on Iceland’s oldest stone corral which is still in use. After we pass the last inhabited farm we ride along the Fossá canyon, a remarkable canyon with many waterfalls. Basalt rocks and small hills were elves life lays along our way after we leave the civilisation. We reach the deserted farm Þórljótsstaðir where we stay for the night in a simple equipped but cosy mountain hut. The surroundings are beautiful and invite for walks while the horses graze just around us. An old turf house is just beside the hut and tells stories from past times. We will spend an unforgettable time here. We will listen to stories about the life in years past and see the place with different eyes. Red glowing mountains around us will make this night really special. Ride lasts about 6 -7 hours.
Friday:
After a relaxing night and a good breakfast we saddle our horses again and ride back to Lýtingsstaðir, enjoying the landscape and the tolt of our horses which head home in fast tolt (ca 5-6 hours). A hot shower, a comfortable bed and a big dinner welcome us back at Lýtingsstaðir.
Saturday:
Today's ride (ca 3 hours) will bring us along the soft path on the Svartá riverbanks who invite us for a last fast tolt on our marvellous horses. Afterwards we drive you to the magnificent valley Austurdalur with deep canyons formed by glacial rivers. We take a walk on a deserted farm and listen to stories about a time past. Back at Lýtingsstaðir we enjoy a delicious dinner and spend the last evening together talking about the past days full of new experiences.
Sunday:
The tour ends after breakfast. Guests leave the farm or can book additional days.

It is advisable to have your own personal insurance when joining the riding tour. This tour is undertaken at the participants own risk. Riders must wear riding helmets.
Your riding clothes and boots must be disinfected before you arrive.
For this riding tour it is necessary to have previous riding experience.
