Riding program - Riding tours
Highlight I
This tour has been in our program the last three years and turned out to be a big success. That’s why we will offer this tour again, giving you the possibility to ride excellent horses through a magnificent landscape and learning a lot about Iceland and its people.
The tour suits well in combination with the Highland adventure.
Program
Monday:
Guests arrive at Lýtingsstaðir followed by a short ride.
Tuesday:
We ride into the valley Austurdalur alongside two glacial rivers, Austari and Vestari Jökulsá. We stop at hot springs. We enjoy panoramic views over Skagafjörður and leave the horses on the last inhabited farm (Bústaðir) in the valley. We drive back to Lýtingsstaðir for the night.
Wednesday:
We drive to the horses, saddle and ride along an amazing deep canyon formed by the glacial river. We cross the river by a bridge and ride to the farm Merkigíl. From there it is not far to the breathtaking canyon Merkigíl which we enter by walking down with our horses. We find a nice rest place on the bottom and enjoy the peace of this impressive place before riding back to Bústaðir where the horses stay for another night.
Thursday:
We are on our way back to Lýtingsstaðir and enjoy once more the beautiful view over Skagafjörður while our horses head home in fast tolt speed.
Friday:
The horses will get a day off and we go on sightseeing. We drive along Skagafjörður and its remarkable islands and come to the small fishing town Siglufjörður. We visit the local Herring museum which got many awards and breathe maritime air while walking along the fishing harbour. We go back to Lýtingsstaðir.
Saturday:
We spend the morning in the saddle, enjoying the horse’s fast speed. After lunch we prepare for a rafting trip on the glacial river Vestari Jökulsá and relax in a hot tube. We go for a last ride in the evening sun after dinner.
Sunday:
The tour ends after breakfast. Guests leave for Reykjavík or stay for the highland adventure.

We reserve the right to alter any itinerary in the participants best interest or for reasons of safety.
It is advisable to have your own personal insurance when joining the riding tour. This tour is undertaken at the participants own risk. Riders must wear riding helmets.
Your riding clothes and boots must be disinfected before you arrive.
For this riding tour it is necessary to have previous riding experience.
This tour requires a minimum of 2 participants.
