Riding program - Riding tours
Perls of Skagafjörður
This tour contains some of our program highlights, giving you the possibility to ride excellent horses through a magnificent landscape, to visit interesting places and to learn a lot about Iceland and its people. You will go on a two day trip into the highlands and visit Siglufjörður, the former “World capital of the herring”.
Program
Monday:
Guests arrive at Lýtingsstaðir followed by a short ride. Dinner and accommodation on Lýtingsstaðir.
Tuesday:
We ride on an old path which was forgotten for many years and has been discovered again a few years ago. The path was once used by the farmers to visit the community parliament. Now we enjoy the marvellous view over Skagafjörður while riding on the soft path. We find a nice place to stop and have lunch. We continue our way to the famous competition ground Vindheimamelar where we leave the horses for the night. We drive back to Lýtingsstaðir. Ride lasts about 5 hours.
Wednesday:
After breakfast we drive back to the horses and saddle up. Maybe we have the possibility to ride on the famous oval track before we pass the waterfall Reykjafoss and ride back to Lýtingsstaðir. Ride lasts about 5 hours.
Thursday:
The horses get a day off and we go sightseeing. We drive along Skagafjörður and its remarkable islands, listen to their stories and enjoy the view over the seaside. We drive along a spectacular coast road and enter the small fishing town Siglufjörður, just at the end of the world. We visit the local Herring museum which got many awards and breathe maritime air while walking along the fishing harbour. We drive back to Lýtingsstaðir were we are welcome with a delicious dinner.
Friday:
We leave for a two day ride into the highlands. We ride up on the mountain Goðdalafjall. It is like entering the top of the world when the view over the glaciers opens just in front of us. We cross a various landscape with rocks, stones, lava and heather (ca. 6 hours). We arrive at the new and cosy mountain cabin Hraunslækur where we spend the evening with a delicious dinner and maybe some singing and will have a good nights sleep.
Saturday:
After a rich breakfast we saddle the horses and ride back to Lýtingsstaðir (ca. 6 hours). We will have a marvellous view over Skagafjörður when we ride down the mountains. The horses head home in a fast tolt. Dinner and accommodation at Lýtingsstaðir.
Sunday:
The tour ends after breakfast. Guests say “Good bye” to horses, guides and hosts and leave Lýtingsstaðir.

Riding helmet, windbreaker and rainwear, riding and walking boots

We reserve the right to alter any itinerary in the participants best interest or for reasons of safety.
It is advisable to have your own personal insurance when joining the riding tour. This tour is undertaken at the participants own risk. Riders must wear riding helmets.
Your riding clothes and boots must be disinfected before you arrive.
For this riding tour it is necessary to have previous riding experience.
This tour requires a minimum of 4 participants.
