This tour is the classical Lýtingsstaðir tour, unchanged since 9 years!
During this special tour you will discover the beautiful valley of Austurdalur with its unique landscape. You will ride through a part of historical Iceland and hear stories of the valley’s people throughout history which have made this place very special.

Program

Monday:

Guests arrive at Lýtingsstaðir followed by a short ride.

Tuesday:

We ride into the valley Austurdalur alongside two glacial rivers, Austari and Vestari Jökulsá. We stop at hot springs. We enjoy panoramic views over Skagafjörður and leave the horses on the last inhabited farm in the valley.

Wednesday:

We ride beside a beautiful canyon, cross the glacial river by bridge and continue our way to the mountain church Ábær. We rest here for a while to enjoy the spirit of this lonely but impressive place before we go on further into the valley on sandy riding paths. We turn around and ride in the shadow of the high mountains back to the horse’s night rest place.

Thursday:

Today we have to walk with our horses through the breathtaking canyon of Merkigíl. This is an unforgettable adventure. We leave the horses at a nearby farm.

Friday:

We are on our way back to Lýtingsstaðir and enjoy once more the spectacular view over Skagafjörður while the horses head home in their comfortable tolt.

Saturday:

The tour ends after breakfast. Guests can book additional days at Lýtingsstaðir.

  • Transfers from/to the nearest bus station (Varmahlið) or airport (Sauðárkrókur) to Lýtingsstaðir

Please bring

  • Riding helmet, windbreaker and rainwear, riding and walking boots

  • Small camera for taking photographs during the riding tour

  • We reserve the right to alter any itinerary in the participants best interest or for reasons of safety.

  • It is advisable to have your own personal insurance when joining the riding tour. This tour is undertaken at the participants own risk. Riders must wear riding helmets.

  • Your riding clothes and boots must be disinfected before you arrive.

  • For this riding tour it is necessary to have previous riding experience.

  • This tour requires a minimum of 2 participants.
