Riding program - Riding tours

Information

Since the year 2000 we offer riding holidays and riding tours in a private atmosphare and with small groups.
Our aim is to provide a high quality and individual service. We want our guests to enjoy excellent horses, food and guidance and the warmhearted atmosphare of our house.

We are authorised as a travel agency by the Icelandic Tourist Board.

Our offers

We offer riding tours with a variety of different highlights and levels of difficulty.
On longer trips at least two horses are provided for every guest. While one horse is ridden the other horse is ponied beside. This is a traditional way of riding in Iceland and horses and guests enjoy it. It gives us the possibiliy to ride without any stress through our beautiful valleys. On the highland adventure we drive a herd of free running horses with us which is a great experience in the uninhabited highlands.
Lýtingsstaðir is the beginning for every riding tour and accommodation is mostly provided here, except for the multi day tours containing accommodation in mountain cabs. Riding tour program 2010

Our riding holidays suit guests with intermediate and novice experience and families are very welcome too.

For short stay visitors we recommend our offer Stop & Ride.

From the beginning of May until the end of September we welcome individual travelers for a shorter or longer Horse rental.

For groups

We organize special designed riding tours with or without sightseeing for your riding club, your family or friends.

Please contact us in time that we can design your special tour at the date you wish!

Accommodation on our riding tours will be in our farm house at Lýtingsstaðir (other than overnight stays in the highlands which occur on some of our tours). We have four double rooms, two triple rooms and a cosy sitting room as well as a big dining room. We also provide lots of books, games, photos, videos, songbooks and a guitar for our guests use.

Bed linen and towels are included in our tours. If you book single days you can order bed linen and towels for extra charge. Please bring your own sleeping bag and towels for the highland adventure.

If your tour contains an overnight stay in a mountain cabin, please expect simple equipped but cosy accommodation with dormitories. Some cabins have a WC, but rarely electricity. There is always gas provided to cook a warm meal!

On our riding tours you will get full board. Normally we start with a dinner on the day of your arrival and end with breakfast on your day of departure. Full board includes breakfast, lunch (sandwiches, cookies etc.) and a big warm meal for dinner. You will taste fresh fish and delicious lamb as well as a variety of dairy products. We provide coffee, tea, water and lemonade. Alcoholic drinks are not included!

We pick up and drop off guests at the bus station in Varmahlið. If necessary we provide transfer from and to the domestic airports in Sauðárkrókur or Akureyri for extra charge.
Check in for guests travelling with a rented car is between 04.00 pm and 07.00 pm. Check out on the day of departure until 10.00 am. Other times on request.

At Lýtingsstaðir we insist that all our guests use riding helmets. If possible, we recommend you bring your own. We recommend the same for rain wear. We do keep some helmets and rain clothes for short stay visitors.

Tours are based on a minimum number of 4 guests (10 guests for the highland adventure). Because of this we can guarantee the departure of almost every tour on our program in advance. The Maximum of a group is 14 participants.

Tours and programs are marked with different numbers of stars which show the level of riding difficulty involved. Programs with no stars are suitable for beginners.

We reserve the right to alter any itinerary in the guest’s best interest or for reasons of safety.
It is advisable to have your own personal insurance when joining one of our riding tours. All tours are undertaken at the participants own risk.

To protect the Icelandic horse from infectious diseases, visitors are asked to adopt strict bio security measures. Riding clothes and boots must be disinfected before you arrive, used riding equipments such as bridles, whips etc. may not be imported.

Prepare for all kind of weather when travelling to Iceland. Bring warm clothes, gloves, ear band, warm jacket and good shoes!.
